Flying with CBD: Can You Take CBD on a Plane?

Can you fly with CBD?

You already know CBD is awesome (or you probably wouldn’t be reading this.) It can help with focus, enhance your ability to sleep and relax, stabilize your mood, and more. And if you’re flying, whether for vacation, visiting family, or for work, you’re going to want that CBD going with you. But in an era where it seems like the rules for what you can or can’t take on a plane are unpredictable, it’s easy to get confused about the restrictions for flying with CBD oil or other CBD products.

There are many moving parts to consider when answering this question. For simplicity’s sake, we’re only talking about domestic flights in the US. Broadly speaking, yes, you can bring CBD on a plane, but there are restrictions.

Is CBD Federally Legal?

Airplanes and air travel are under federal jurisdiction. This means it’s important to not fly with illegal substances. You may then be wondering if CBD is legal at the federal level. The 2018 Farm Bill made CBD and other hemp-based cannabinoid products legal as long as they have less than 0.3% THC. (THC is the psychoactive compound in marijuana, not hemp, that causes the high feeling.) If your product is under the federal THC threshold, it’s federally legal.

If you want to be positive your product is under the threshold, check out the Certificate of Analysis (COA) for your product and batch. And if you’re concerned about getting through security, screen print or print it off. A good company will make COAs readily available and easy to find. It will tell you the amount of THC in the product.

Can You Fly with CBD Gummies?

Now that you’re confident you have a legal product, let’s dive into the various options for taking CBD and evaluate the ease of flying with them. First up, CBD gummies. CBD gummies are pretty easy to fly with. You can carry them on with you or stash them in your checked bag under the plane. They will be subjected to the same rules, regulations, and screening as other medications, vitamins, supplements, or food.

Can You Fly with CBD Oil?

We started off with the easiest CBD product to fly with and will keep heading down the list of “yes” answers…but with possible restrictions.

CBD oil or tinctures can be packed in your checked luggage or in your carry-on bag or purse. However, it will be subject to the longstanding restriction on liquids and gels (must be less than 3.4 fluid ounces). It shouldn’t be a problem, however, as most CBD oils are sold in 1 fluid ounce bottles.

Can You Take a CBD Vape Pen on a Plane?

The question of flying with a vaping pen or any other model of vaping device gets a little trickier. It’s still a “yes”…but with a lot of “no” built in.

If you’re taking separate e-liquids or cartridges with you to use in the device, they can be either packed in your luggage and checked under the plane or in the carry-on luggage, However, the 3.4 fluid ounce limit still applies.

The vaporizer itself can be carried on the plane. It cannot be used during the flight and effective measures must be taken to prevent the intentional or accidental activation of the device.

The vape pen, mod, or any other version of the device cannot be checked under the plane. I know that seems strange. After all, it seems if it can be in the carry-on, it can be checked. And with a lot of things you fly with, the rules for carry-ons are usually more restrictive. But a vape device cannot be stowed in the cargo area of the plane because of the battery. (It’s for the good of everyone on the plane…just go with it.)

The easiest option when it comes to traveling with vapes is to bring your favorite flavor or flavors in an all-in-one, disposable device. Pack it in your carry-on bag, pocket, or purse so you don’t have to mess with all the parts and what can go where.
